Many industries are using social media and online platforms to promote and advertise their products and services.
From Instagram and Facebook to LinkedIn and online blogging, in this day and age we are continually bombarded with visual, written and audio content that competes for our following and attention.
With all these posts across all these platforms competing for people’s attention, it can be daunting to set up or try and push your own business. In a world where many businesses are thriving online, you may ask yourself: how can I get people to notice my particular business?
If you have a business that is built from online traffic, creating and consistently maintaining social media profiles across different platforms is vital to your success.
Depending on your business, most of your ideal audience and clientele will arguably be active users of things like Facebook and Instagram, so making yourself known through a strong follower base and having an impact across those outlets is a must.
The overall goal of having a business profile on social media is to build an engaged community of potential customers!
By definition, a follower is:
“someone who supports or admires a specific person or set of ideas”
Therefore, you’ll want to be able to target like-minded people who are supportive of, and impressed by, the content you post- and thus your business as a whole.
Understanding why you want and need followers to start with is an important step to achieving a successful follower base.
It might seem obvious, but there can be many reasons for wanting followers.
From a clear business perspective, it is clear that followers can turn into customers.
Not only that, in today’s world followers arguably come first– before customers!
So here are 5 steps on how to do this!

#1 FIGURING OUT WHY
Knowing the reasoning behind anything you do to portray your business online is super important.
This means being clear on what your goals are and why you are trying to achieve them, because if you don’t have strong enough reasons WHY you want to build a following you are not going to be able to successfully implement action to get followers in the first place.
To figure out the reasons why you need to build a following, it might be helpful to consider:
- What is it going to mean to you?
- What is exciting about it?
- What will it cost you if you don’t?
#2 PROVIDE EXCELLENT LEADERSHIP
Being a leader in your industry is really important in not only finding but engaging your followers. Let’s have a look at an example! The health and wellness industry is a good example of the impact of follower engagement, and is a very prominent industry in today’s society.
Case Study: yoga studio
Yoga studios are very common and popular, so figuring out how to stand out from your competitors is vital.
This is where being a leader in your niche comes in, meaning you should focus on who YOU can best serve.
For example, you might be the best yoga studio for local burnt out corporates, because yoga is how you transformed your health and life when you were in the corporate rat race.
For any industry, focused consideration and narrowing down your potential audience is the key to building a follower base that will gain maximum value from following you, which will lead to a higher customer conversion rate.
The most important part here is that you are honest with yourself and focus on who you can actually best serve...we are all unique with our unique DNA and set of experiences, and we can all lead in a specific area if we commit to focusing and develop our strengths. There’s no point trying to appeal to everyone- the more specific the better.
#3 PROVIDING VALUABLE CONTENT
In considering the definition of a follower, we know that we need to give people what they want!
First and foremost, you want to be solving a problem for your followers.
Therefore, it would be useful to consider the following questions when thinking about the content you create:
- What solutions could you give?
- How can you make their life better?
- How can you improve the customer experience?
- Can you offer discounts or extra information?
- How can you go the extra mile and get the wow factor?
If you own a business that is based on a physical location, people may be concerned with the details of the space itself; what it looks like and its functionality.
Therefore, an easy solution would be to create a video tour of the space and have it as a highlight on your Insta profile.
Alternatively, maybe you distribute a product, or provide a service that operates in peoples’ homes?
A great way to provide value to your audience would be to educate them with tips in the form of little blogs or videos!
When creating your content, a good mentality to have is to create content that reflects the feelings and emotions that people will be experiencing when using your product or service.
If you are a businessperson that shows a lot of gratitude and exudes a positive attitude, and you know that this rubs off on your customers when they are around you, you might post quotes/articles/blogs around positivity and gratitude.
As humans, we buy feelings and emotions first. When someone purchases your product or service, you want them to be able to experience a bit of you as well.
Don’t limit yourself to the product you sell, creating a brand that aligns with the attitudes and values of your audience is how you’re going to sell your product to start with!
#4 BE A PRACTITIONER OF THE PLATFORM
You can build a following anywhere -Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin, Pinterest, the list goes on.
In this day and age there are a number of emerging platforms and social media opportunities on which to capture a following, and the most important part is you LEARN and UNDERSTAND the platform by BEING ON IT.
It is this understanding that will separate the successful people from the rest of the pack, because this is where the vital action is taken.
However, it’s also important to understand that you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself!
Using people who are good at this as example’s is a good idea.
Using your competition for inspiration:
Following people you admire will allow you to gage their strategy and the way they go about things.
This should not be done with the intention to copy anyone outright, but simply model the strategies they are using and adopt them to suit your own personality and style.
In addition, it is useful to engage in communities to listen and get a feel for the audience, and see what hashtags the top accounts use.
Searching hashtags and engaging with your ideal audience will mean you can drive traffic to your profile.
All in all, you want to learn what it takes to be a successful on a platform.
Always remember that you don’t have to do it all by yourself!
You can watch Youtube videos, read blogs, attend workshops, learn by trial and error, or hire a coach to train you…
It’s not necessarily how, but that you’ve simply put in the work that matters.
#5 MAINTAINING CONSISTENCY
If you want to achieve a following that really is engaged and cares about you, you have to put in the TIME and LOVE!
This is about building relationships.
If you’re like me, I’m sure the relationships you value most in life are probably the ones you’ve had the longest.
DEPTH and GENUINE connection takes time, but it’s where all the beauty and joy is!
This means that taking consistent daily action is extremely important.
Even if it’s only five minutes a day, making the time to care for your audience will work wonders.
This in conjunction with being a good leader and setting an example will provide more than enough reason for people to follow you.
It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, there will be ways to stand out to your ideal audience. All you have to do is find out how!
